Colloquy Downeast

Spirited Conversations in Great Company

Colloquy Downeast was formed in 2000 to provide a program for learning and thoughtful discussion of topics of general interest. Since then, we have organized more than 100 colloquies on a wide variety of subjects. The organization is managed by an all-volunteer Steering Committee comprised of up to 15 members of the community.

Mission Statement

Colloquy Downeast’s activities are informed by our Mission Statement:

The mission of Colloquy Downeast is to create an independent learning community (supported and nourished by residents of the Blue Hill Peninsula, Deer Isle and beyond) engaged in enriching discussions through exchange of thoughts and ideas. This mission is supported by informed volunteer facilitators who offer analytical, interactive and conversational learning experiences to participants willing to share ideas and challenge their own assumptions.

Colloquy Participation Fees

Colloquy Downeast has established the colloquy participant fee to defray the costs of organizing and offering the colloquies. Colloquy facilitators are provided with an honorarium, mostly intended to cover their out-of-pocket costs for materials, refreshments, etc. associated with the colloquy. Another portion of the fee goes toward the organization’s administrative costs, such as advertising, mailing, website costs, etc. and a reserve for future contingencies. Lastly, Colloquy Downeast typically makes a substantial donation to the venues hosting the colloquy meetings, such as the Blue Hill Public Library.

Tax Status

Based in part on its educational mission, Colloquy Downeast is characterized as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. While colloquy participation fees are not tax deductible, the organization welcomes other donations, which may be tax deductible, from those who are interested in supporting or expanding our efforts. Please contact us at info@colloquydowneast.org if you would like to consider a donation or have a specific educational opportunity that you’d like to support in cooperation with our organization.
