Colloquy Downeast

Spirited Conversations in Great Company

The purpose of a colloquy is to explore the ideas raised by the topic; no previous knowledge of the subject or author is required. We are not attempting to reach a preconceived “end”; there is no ultimate “answer,” rather it is the exchange of ideas that is important. The values of our conversation include openness, reason, creativity, clarity, respect, and civility.

  • Share your own perspective with “I think” or “in my experience.”
  • To prepare, read the assigned materials in advance.
  • Be willing to explore ideas. Questions are encouraged; there are no unimportant questions.
  • It helps to raise your hand.
  • Concentrate on what the speaker is saying, rather than planning your own comment.
  • Speak one at a time – don’t interrupt.
  • Build on others’ ideas; connect your thoughts to the discussion.
  • Keep your contributions concise. Make space for everyone.
  • Disagree respectfully – challenge ideas, not people.
