The purpose of a colloquy is to explore the ideas raised by the topic; no previous knowledge of the subject or author is required. We are not attempting to reach a preconceived “end”; there is no ultimate “answer,” rather it is the exchange of ideas that is important. The values of our conversation include openness, reason, creativity, clarity, respect, and civility.
- Share your own perspective with “I think” or “in my experience.”
- To prepare, read the assigned materials in advance.
- Be willing to explore ideas. Questions are encouraged; there are no unimportant questions.
- It helps to raise your hand.
- Concentrate on what the speaker is saying, rather than planning your own comment.
- Speak one at a time – don’t interrupt.
- Build on others’ ideas; connect your thoughts to the discussion.
- Keep your contributions concise. Make space for everyone.
- Disagree respectfully – challenge ideas, not people.
